Accessibility

Accessibility for your website? Absolutely! Think about this. The first website ever created was published on August 6, 1991, written almost entirely in HTML. The reason I bring this up is websites have only been around for 30 years. As a whole, this industry is young, fast-changing, and still maturing. As technology has made life more streamlined, it has also presented challenges for some. Web design is no exception.

Being blind, colorblind, or unable to navigate a website with a mouse & keyboard are common challenges. The great news is we have plenty of tools at our disposal to help mitigate these issues.

Content is a great place to start by making it descriptive, written the same way we speak, and consistent from page to page. You can tackle this from both the front end of your website (what you see) and the backend (within the actual code). Both together create a roadmap for navigation tools, making the journey that much easier.

Next is color. Color plays a huge role not only in directing the attention of your user but in conveying information. High contrast between overlapping colors makes it easy for people with colorblindness to view your website.

Finally, font choice and size are essential, especially when your site needs to work on your laptop and phone. It doesn't look great when text is too small to read on your phone, and let's be honest, zooming in is the worst.
